Cultivar and technical information
The Shizu-Inzatsu 131 cultivar is a hybrid of a Japanese variety and Manipuli 15, an Assam tea tree introduced to Japan at the beginning of the 1920s. It was developed at the Shizuoka Prefecture research centre, but Shizu-Inzatsu 131 was never officially registered. Inzatsu 131 was also crossed a number of times and is the parent of more recent cultivars such as Sôfû, Fuji-kaori, and even Kiyoka. The tea’s Assam roots make it a very classic cultivar that—at the same time—doesn’t fit in the standard criteria of Japanese tea. But it is this uniqueness that gives the tea its charm. It is obviously very rare.
This Inzatsu 131 sencha comes from Tenryû, the mountainous region north of the city of Hamamatsu in Shizuoka.

The nose
This sencha delivers the complex and unique fragrances that are characteristic of this cultivar. It has a surprising bouquet of grapes, lily-of-the-valley, and green peas.

The mouth
While this sencha naturally only offers very little umami, it has a very intense sweet sensation. It can be said that for an Inzatsu 131, the astringency remains relatively discreet. The floral, vegetal aromas are very characteristic.
In subsequent infusions, the aromas and fragrances are much more emphasized. The grape notes are also stronger, while the tea always retains the small white flower and green pea aromas. The astringency becomes stronger, but the tea will always remain enjoyable for lovers of powerful green teas.

Summary
This is an unusual, intense, slightly tannic tea. But it also has a unique, superb, sweet, very aromatic length.
